Ready to Make Your Own Wood Strip Sea Kayak?

By on December 9, 2015

During the long cold snow-bound Winter last year in Pennsylvania, a good friend/neighbor spent his days hand-crafting a gorgeous wood strip sea kayak. Most of us who enjoy paddling the waterways until the snow and the ice stop us tend to switch over to another outdoor activity, such as cross country skiing. But, our good friend, Donald Porta, decided to build himself a kayak.

Master Porta, as he is known around here, documented the building sessions in a series of videos he shared on his Youtube channel. He also has a wonderful collection of other DIY videos that will keep you captivated for many hours of instruction creating hydroponics and aquaponics systems, native/tribal deer hide instruments, and much more.

This Summer we finally got to see this beautifully-handcrafted kayak, and, even better, we all got to take it out and enjoy paddling before a full-moon paddle.

The kayak was super sweet to handle, but after that evening, Master Porta decided that the kayak definitely needed a skeg, so he just recently finished crafting and installing a skeg for better tracking with his kayak. You can check out the entire crafting process on Donald Porta’s Youtube channel here.

Enjoy!
