The holidays are behind us, and you made the same old resolution to lose weight and get back into shape. Are you ready to include a natural secret weapon in your attack plan?

So, what does a Polar Bear Plunge, Ice Bath, or making snow angels have to do with with losing weight and getting in shape?

Okay, so maybe those aren’t all that appealing to you, but the science behind cold thermogenesis is pretty encouraging for those of us who live in true Winter climates. The last two days have both begun well into the lower single digits – and just what is the secret weapon found in the crystallized beauty of it all?

The awesome power of COLD to reshape our bodies!

Humans have deliberately used exposure to cold throughout all of history to sharpen up bodies and minds. Today, most folks look at the annual Polar Bear Plunge as just a fun lark, but cultures have done these cold baths for thousands of years.

Now modern athletic science is catching up with ancient natural knowledge and giving us real proof that purposeful and calculated exposure to extremely cold temperatures and water “do a body good.” Just Google Cold Thermogenesis for more information, and there are definitely some critics out there, but overall the studies very much support that subjecting our bodies to cold extremes is an excellent and highly beneficial method of propping up not only our immune systems, but even our bodies’ fat adaptations.

And the Awesome News is…

Cold reshapes the various forms of stored fat in our bodies from the dastardly unwanted white fat into the highly-effective brown fat that we need to properly and energetically fuel our metabolism.

“There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.”

-Explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes

While jumping into an icy lake may not be your thing,  and despite the fact that a lot of people are successfully experimenting with ice baths and ice vests to help reshape their body and recharge their metabolism, don’t hide inside from the cold temperatures. Use the cold months to your metabolic advantage and adapt your internal thermostat through Winter hiking, backpacking, cross country / downhill skiing, snowshoeing, kayaking, and so much more! (And, yes, that is me in the cover pic rushing into one of my many polar bear plunges)

Don’t hide inside – get outside and “do your body good!”
