How Long Does it Take Baxter the Bloodhound to Track and Locate a Missing Person?
A quick search for information yielded this startling statistic from a July 26, 2013 HuffPost article, There’s approximately 125,000 search-and-rescue missions where volunteer teams are deployed … for missing Alzheimer’s patients every year,” said Kimberly Kelly, founder and director of Project Far From Home, an Alzheimer’s education program designed for law enforcement and #search and rescue personnel. (HuffPost 07/26/13).
I met up with Deputy Ryan Williams and his search and rescue #Bloodhound, Baxter, at Oil Creek State Park in NW #Pennsylvania for a demonstration of Baxter’s #tracking skills, but it turns out that I learned a whole lot more than I had anticipated.
After a quick intro, I stepped back from the video and let Deputy Williams and Baxter do what they do best. First, Deputy Williams educated us about scenthounds and how the dogs function best, and then Baxter went to work and tracked our “missing” teen volunteer, Tyrone. After the successful search, Deputy Williams continued to share a lot more information about the increase in missing persons who suffer primarily from dementia and autism. He offered some excellent suggestions for caregivers to consider to mitigate the opportunities for loved ones to go missing.
Please consider donating to the care and upkeep of Baxter and the expansion of the K9 programs in our communities.
